Your skincare starter guide

Everything I wish clients knew before they walked into the studio. Skin type, routine, ingredients, common mistakes, and what to do about your biggest concern. All in one read, no filler.

Approx. 10-minute read

Chapter 01

Hi, I'm Jen

I built My Escape on a simple idea: great skin isn't about chasing the latest trend or owning fifteen serums. It's about understanding what your skin actually needs, being consistent, and not undoing your own work by accident.

This guide is what I'd tell you in the studio if you asked where to start. I've been a Licensed Esthetician since 2007. That's almost two decades of treating skin, teaching routines, and watching which habits move the needle and which ones just sell more product.

If you read nothing else: cleanse gently, hydrate, wear SPF every single day, and give a routine 8 to 12 weeks before judging it. The rest is optimization.

Chapter 02

Know your skin type

Every routine starts here. You can't pick the right products without knowing what your skin actually does on a normal day. Read each card and find the one that sounds most like you.

Dry

Skin feels tight after cleansing. Flaking, fine lines more visible when dehydrated. Little to no shine through the day.

Priority

Barrier repair and hydration first.

Oily

Visible shine on the T-zone within a few hours. Enlarged pores on nose/cheeks. Prone to congestion.

Priority

Gentle cleansing + balance, not stripping.

Combination

T-zone gets oily, cheeks stay normal or dry. Skin changes through the seasons.

Priority

Zone-based products: lighter on T-zone, richer on cheeks.

Sensitive

Quick to redden. Stings with new products. Reactive to fragrance, alcohol, strong actives.

Priority

Soothing ingredients, minimal routine, introduce new products slowly.

Normal / balanced

Minimal oiliness or dryness, even texture, few breakouts. Rare. Count yourself lucky.

Priority

Maintain what's working. Don't over-engineer.

Note: Acne-prone, mature, and hyperpigmented are concerns, not skin types. You can be dry AND mature, or oily AND acne-prone. We'll cover concerns in Chapter 06.

Chapter 03

The 3 non-negotiables

If you do nothing else, do these three things consistently. Every other piece of skincare advice builds on top of this foundation.

01

Cleanse gently

Why: Removes buildup without stripping. Your skin should feel fresh, not tight.

How: Lukewarm water. Pea-sized amount. 30-60 seconds. Pat dry. Don't rub.

Avoid: Foaming cleanser that squeaks on your skin is too strong.

02

Moisturize daily

Why: Holds water in the skin and keeps your barrier resilient.

How: Apply to damp skin for better absorption. Even oily skin needs it.

Avoid: Skipping moisturizer because you're oily makes oil worse.

03

SPF every morning

Why: UVA damage is cumulative. No SPF = no visible progress over time.

How: Broad-spectrum, SPF 30+, daily. Reapply when outdoors for extended periods.

Avoid: Skipping on cloudy days or indoors. UVA passes through both.

Chapter 04

AM & PM routine

Order matters. Apply thinnest to thickest, water-based before oil-based. Here's what a proper routine looks like. Pick and choose from each step based on your skin and goals.

โ˜€ Morning

Protect the day

  1. 1

    Cleanse

    Gentle, not stripping.

  2. 2

    Tone

Optional. Only if it suits your skin (most skip this).

  3. 3

    Targeted serum

Vitamin C, niacinamide, peptides, or hydrating. Pick one for your concern.

  4. 4

    Eye cream

    Targets specific under-eye concerns.

  5. 5

    Moisturizer

    Locks in everything above.

  6. 6

    SPF 30+

The single most important anti-aging step.

๐ŸŒ™ Evening

Repair overnight

  1. 1

    Makeup removal (if needed)

    Oil-based cleanser or balm first.

  2. 2

    Cleanse

Double cleanse if you wore makeup or SPF.

  3. 3

    Active serum

Retinol, AHA, or BHA (not all in one night).

  4. 4

    Hydrating serum

    Hyaluronic acid, peptides, or niacinamide.

  5. 5

    Eye cream

Richer formulas are fine at night.

  6. 6

    Moisturizer

Slightly richer than your AM choice.

  7. 7

    Face oil (optional)

Seals everything in if your skin is dry.

Not a rule book:Most people don't need all 6-7 steps. Start with the non-negotiables (cleanse, moisturize, SPF) and add one item at a time, waiting 2 weeks before introducing anything new.

Chapter 05

Active ingredients, decoded

The serum aisle is overwhelming because brands sell ingredientslike they're magic. They're not. Here's what each one actually does, when to use it, and what it doesn't play nicely with.

Vitamin C

Does:
Brightens dullness, fades dark spots, protects from free radicals. A must for uneven tone.
When:
AM, on clean skin before moisturizer.
Pairs with:
Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, SPF.
Avoid:
Retinol (alternate nights), strong AHA/BHA same day.

Retinol

Does:
Speeds cell turnover, softens fine lines, fades pigmentation, prevents signs of aging.
When:
PM only, 2x a week to start, build up to nightly.
Pairs with:
Moisturizer, peptides, hyaluronic acid.
Avoid:
Vitamin C same night, AHA/BHA same night, pregnancy.

AHAs (glycolic, lactic)

Does:
Exfoliate the surface (smoother texture, brighter tone, better product absorption).
When:
PM, 2-3x a week max. Start low.
Pairs with:
Hydrating serums, barrier creams the next morning.
Avoid:
Retinol same night, daily sun exposure without SPF.

BHAs (salicylic)

Does:
Oil-soluble. Penetrates pores to clear congestion and calm acne.
When:
PM or targeted spot use, 2-3x a week.
Pairs with:
Gentle cleansers, niacinamide, hydrating layers.
Avoid:
Over-layering with AHAs (causes irritation).

Peptides

Does:
Signal the skin to produce collagen. Firmer, bouncier, fewer expression lines.
When:
AM or PM, all skin types.
Pairs with:
Just about everything. Hard to go wrong.
Avoid:
No real incompatibilities. A safe starter active.

Niacinamide

Does:
Calms redness, minimizes pore appearance, supports barrier, helps with oil balance.
When:
AM or PM, daily.
Pairs with:
Vitamin C, retinol, hyaluronic acid.
Avoid:
Very few conflicts. Works for almost everyone.

Hyaluronic acid

Does:
Holds water in the skin. Instant plumping. Doesn't exfoliate or treat. It hydrates.
When:
AM and PM, applied to damp skin, sealed with moisturizer.
Pairs with:
Layers under literally everything.
Avoid:
Applying to completely dry skin in a dry climate (it can pull moisture out instead of in).

Rule of thumb:If you're using a strong active (retinol, AHA, BHA), don't introduce another strong active at the same time. Your skin can only repair so fast.

Chapter 06

Target your biggest concern

Pick one main concern at a time. Focus beats breadth. A 12-week protocol for one thing outperforms a scattered routine chasing five.

Dehydrated / dry

Tight feeling, fine lines from moisture loss, flaking, dull appearance.

Do

Gentle cleanser, hyaluronic acid on damp skin, rich moisturizer, SPF.

Avoid

Hot water, stripping foaming cleansers, over-exfoliating.

Pro service

Thesera H Glass Skin Facial. Hydrates at the cellular level.

Fine lines / aging

Expression lines, loss of firmness, less bounce, texture changes.

Do

Vitamin C (AM), retinol (PM), peptides, SPF every single day.

Avoid

Skipping SPF, harsh scrubs, chasing too many new products.

Pro service

Thesera L Melting Thread Lift or The Fix Lift & Sculpt.

Acne / breakouts

Congestion, active blemishes, post-acne marks, oily T-zone.

Do

Gentle cleanser, BHA 2-3x/week, lightweight moisturizer, non-comedogenic SPF.

Avoid

Over-drying. Stripped skin makes more oil, not less.

Pro service

Thesera G Bio-Microneedling. Works with the barrier intact.

Hyperpigmentation

Dark spots, post-acne marks, uneven patches, melasma.

Do

Daily Vitamin C, retinol at night, religious SPF, patience (8-12 weeks).

Avoid

Any sun exposure without SPF. Undoes months of work.

Pro service

Thesera G, MandeliClear Peel, or Procell Microchanneling.

Sensitive / reactive

Redness, stinging with new products, flushing, barrier feels compromised.

Do

Minimal routine: gentle cleanser, calming moisturizer, mineral SPF.

Avoid

Fragrance, alcohol, strong actives, too many new things at once.

Pro service

Thesera H (most universally tolerated), Circadia enzymes.

Dull / uneven tone

Flat look, no glow, texture feels rough, makeup doesn't sit well.

Do

Gentle chemical exfoliation 2x/week, Vitamin C daily, consistent hydration.

Avoid

Scrubs with jagged particles. They micro-tear the skin.

Pro service

Circadia enzymes, Lactic Peel, or a Restorative Escape facial.

Chapter 07

Common mistakes (& the fix)

โœ• Instead of

Switching products every 2 weeks

โœ“ Try this

Give a routine 8-12 weeks before judging results. Skin cycles slowly.

โœ• Instead of

Using 5 active serums at once

โœ“ Try this

Pick one target. Layering conflicts and irritates more than it helps.

โœ• Instead of

Skipping SPF because it's cloudy or you're indoors

โœ“ Try this

UVA passes through clouds and windows. Every morning, no exceptions.

โœ• Instead of

Over-exfoliating to chase instant glow

โœ“ Try this

More than 3x/week with acids or scrubs usually damages the barrier.

โœ• Instead of

Washing face with hot water

โœ“ Try this

Lukewarm. Hot water strips the barrier and dehydrates.

โœ• Instead of

Applying retinol to wet skin

โœ“ Try this

Wait 15 min after cleansing. Wet skin = deeper penetration = more irritation.

โœ• Instead of

Chasing viral social media routines

โœ“ Try this

What works for someone with different skin, age, and climate won't automatically work for you.

โœ• Instead of

Expecting professional results from drugstore actives

โœ“ Try this

Clinical-strength ingredients (proper retinol, medical-grade peels) actually work faster. Both have their place.

Chapter 08

Myths vs. truth

โ€œDrinking more water hydrates your skin.โ€

Truth: Hydration is about topicals and barrier function. Water helps general health, but won't fix dehydrated skin.

โ€œOily skin doesn't need moisturizer.โ€

Truth: Skipping moisturizer makes oily skin produce more oil. Use a lighter formula, don't skip it.

โ€œNatural = safe for skin.โ€

Truth: Poison ivy is natural. Many botanicals (essential oils, citrus) are sensitizing. Formulation matters more than 'natural'.

โ€œPores open and close.โ€

Truth: They don't. You can cleanse to clear debris, but you can't shrink them with cold water or open them with steam.

โ€œAnti-aging is only for older skin.โ€

Truth: Prevention works better than correction. SPF and antioxidants from your 20s make a huge difference by your 40s.

โ€œYou only need SPF when you're outside for hours.โ€

Truth: UVA damage is cumulative. 10 minutes here, 20 minutes there adds up to years of exposure.

โ€œScrubs exfoliate better than chemicals.โ€

Truth: Chemical exfoliants (AHA/BHA) are more even and gentle. Scrubs cause micro-tears in many people.

โ€œExpensive skincare always works better.โ€

Truth: Formulation and consistency matter. Some $15 products outperform $150 ones. Know what you're paying for.

Chapter 09

When DIY isn't enough

Home skincare is foundational. But some things need professional care: either because they require tools, products, or protocols that aren't available at retail, or because self-care could make it worse.

  • โ†’You've been consistent for 12+ weeks and see no improvement.
  • โ†’You have persistent hyperpigmentation, melasma, or sun damage.
  • โ†’Acne leaves scars or marks. Those need corrective facials.
  • โ†’You want results faster than a home routine alone can deliver (pre-wedding, big event, etc.).
  • โ†’You've got a compromised barrier (constant redness, stinging, reactivity).
  • โ†’You want anti-aging results beyond what topicals can do.
  • โ†’Cystic acne or anything that might need medical support: see a doctor, not just an esthetician.

Chapter 11

Post-service basics

Whether you just had a facial, a peel, or microchanneling, the first 24-72 hours are when your skin is most receptive and most vulnerable. A few general rules:

First 90 minutes (microchanneling)

Nothing touches the skin. No moisturizer, makeup, hands on face.

First 24 hours

No sun exposure. No sauna, steam, or heavy workouts. Lukewarm water only.

First 48 hours

No active exfoliants, retinol, strong acids. Keep it simple and gentle.

First 7 days

Daily broad-spectrum SPF is mandatory. Your skin is freshly exposed.

Always post-service

If anything feels wrong (persistent stinging, breakout, prolonged redness) message me. Don't Google it.
